Prices of unlocked (SIM-free) smartphones vary across countries. There are three main factors for these price variations. First of all, continuous currency fluctuations. As an example, the relative value of the US dollar vs. the British Pound changes on an ongoing basis and thus may cause price gaps between countries. Secondly, local pricing policies. Some companies will price their products differently by country to satisfy local purchasing power differences and/or account for import taxes. Lastly, VAT/GST differences. Some countries are tax-free (like Hong Kong) while others have high tax rates (e.g., 20% VAT in France).
